Hi,

Has anyone heard of any new virus's that disable active programs and lock out access to system/programs and disable modems/com ports? This may be piggybacked with a worm W32/Sircam.
My Norton Virus scan was updated about Feb 10th or so.

I can't open my computer properties ( locked out from access) to disable my Windows Restore function to run the worm clean up of W32/Sircam that appeared on my computer last night just before I lost control of it. I was installing a BIOS update recommended by HP at the time. Ya, I am having some major comp trouble /sigh. Was just trying to install a new modem Shocked
Anyway if anyone has any info on any new virus's that may have disabled modems or change/disable com ports and /or locks out user access to the computers system please let me know.
Heading back to Norton now to check thier list of new virus's.

Thanks
Zahasha

Update: still researching and running virus scans via floppies

Norton Anti-virus program has appeared back on my desktop and is apparently active as it sent up a window asking it I wanted to update it
I was able to access my computer properties and disable system restore for running virus scans ( not ready to poke around to see what is still disabled)

Things are looking up!!
Just need to get my computer to list modem and com port 3 in my system>device manager and I can install that new modem!!

/cheer

Backup all your files, reformat the HD and reisntall windows. Sounds like you have lots of probs that are not worth problem-solving one by one.

If your computer is not seeing the modem and this is the ONLY problem you seem to be having, did you try changing which slot on your motherboard that the modem is plugged in to?

I am having similar virus related issues on my computer at home. I still need to do a wipe and reinstallation. My issues are somewhat similar in that I was experiencing the lack of permissions to do some administrative things and couldn't access updates etc... Eventually I was able to manually remove some of the problems which allowed for norton and such to remove others. I am partially functional atm, but there are some things that are still not working properly...I can't burn CD's now and I still have the virus trying to install on my computer and when I try to run Microsoft's Spyware Removal Tool it freezes up my comp and a few other issues...

Thing is that I know that even if I could "totally remove" the problem causing junk, it is probably time for a nice clean installation of Windows anyhow. Generally speaking this probably isn't a bad thing to do once a year just to keep things from becomming too cluttered up.

The problem is ... I CAN play EQ atm lol and check my email ... hard to decide to take the time to rebuild it when I would like to be playing EQ and other games lol. So Zah hurry back to EQ so that I can take my time away for a rebuild Razz

Good luck!

Phinneas,

I went to Norton Anti-virus and downloaded the Virus fixes on floppies and force ran them via start>run>A\name of virus fix
Cleaned my system right up Very Happy

Just having some troubles with installing the modem. It is possable some modem system files got deleated some how with the old modems removal. Working with Zoom Techs via email on this, so it is slow going.

Tyranimus, I tired to install XP upgrade on my comp and it didnt work. Apparently, my Presario 7126CL is not recommeded to be upgraded to XP.
Will probably use the upgrade for our old computer.. though my cousin wants to put Linux on it.

Hugssssss

Heres my current update.
I reload Windows ME upon itself from my Presario.
Upon rebooting...
Nav-Auto Protect unable to start
Symevnt.386 is not loaded

comp goes on to update driver data also updates plug and play

then blue screen
Problem with system file
VxD dynamic link call: NTKERN(01)+0000331E to "MTRR ", service 2

I am given a choice to shutdown or continue with a perhaps unstable system
If I choose yes
Hardware plug and play sets up
Windows ME Setup Wizard wants log in
I type my name
get set up message SU0350 set up cannot verify end user license agreement
set up closes and computer turns off.

So this where I am atm.
