If you havent been to Frys electronics you may want to check out their sales on Western Digital hard drives. They had some good sales and WD has $30 rebates.

I picked up 2 hard drives and replaced one in my old win 98 system last night. I replaced a 5 year old 18G drive with the 80G drive. Took me 2 tries to get the disk image to copy over. I also had issues with the cable select (it didn't like it) and had to hard code the disk to be master or slave (It was slave on one chain but became master when moved to other IDE buss). The new drive is much faster than the old one and I can really notice a difference in boot times.

Just thought I would mention it here.

For Cable Select to work, two things need to be in place.

a. Your motherboard has to support it and
b. Your ATA/EIDE cable has to support it.

The only advantage to cable select is ease of configuration. Some of the newer 80-pin cables are not made to support the CSEL signal anymore simply because of the fact that it never caught on very well. Two of the main companies that manufacture CSEL-compatible cables are using TWO end-type IDE terminators instead of one, which cuts down on molding cost, and negates compatibility with cable select features.

The simple fact of the matter is, the only advantage to cable select is ease of configuration (you shouldn't have to move the jumper). Since most hard drives come jumped for master mode (or single mode) by default, it already renders the cable select functionality mostly pointless. You're probably a victim of circumstance, but it really doesn't matter that much. If the hard drive jumper was your only real problem, I'd consider yourself lucky. Mr. Green

Thanks Shi - I feel real lucky and happy that the drive copy worked - even if it did take 2 tries and about 5-6 hours.

A friend of mine laughed when I told him the current drive was 5 years old and still working fine. It was just down to 2 gig free on my other gaming system.

I also thought this was a great price for an 80Gig drive and wanted to pass on the information so others could keep an eye out.
