Who's Shiv? Just curious!
Actually, if you're that hard up for a tape backup program, you can just use the panzy Microsoft Backup that comes with 2000/XP. It will get the backup job done, but it is feature-lacking and has a history of being untrustworthy.
This largely depends on what you're trying to backup. If you're doing a Windows box and don't want to pay, MS Backup is probably the best option. There are WAY better packages out there, but they're costly.
If you're trying to do a Linux or a UNIX system, you might want to consult someone else. I'm still fairly new to that universe, and I have zilch for experience with trying to back them up on tapes.
Just from looking around a bit, I've seen that backup software isn't plentiful or cheap. Where I work, we use ArcServe, which is a several-hundred-dollar package, gets the job done, and just happens to be a huge pain in the ass.
A couple of quick searches I did:
ZD-Net File Library: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=tape+backup&tg=dl-2001
Linux.box.sk Software: http://linux.box.sk/codebox.links.php?&key=backup |

Depending on what you are trying to do Ghost is a great program to save and recover a system. It's fairly cheap I think the single user program is like $69.00. _________________ Gryfndor 65 Wizard

Ghost is horrid for backup purposes, I think.
That is more aimed towards doing a system restore point, or deployment of a simliar system setup over a large number of machines.
When soandso_0b_fuckingpurchasingmotherfucker_01 calls you and says he wants FileNumberchk0000045_038.dat dated 09-04-92, a Ghost image isn't going to be very helpful to you. |

Yeah its more of a recovery system not really a backup system as such. I have all my client machines setup with Ghost corporate so I can quickly recover from catastrophic failures. Its handy for people who would like to run multiple operating systems or setups for different things on a single system. Depends on what your needs are. _________________ Gryfndor 65 Wizard
