This morning McAfee and Symantec are both warning about a new virus called "Mydoom," also known as "Novarg."

This virus is classified as HIGH RISK. Please update your virus definitions, and if you run A/V software on your e-mail server (if you own/have one), update them immediately.

More information on the virus can be found here: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=mydoom

Something else I've noticed that McAfee didn't mention is that the virus sends e-mails that are spoofed to look like receipt, or comfirmation-type messages of messages you've sent. If you use a large, public e-mail service that strips off dangerous attachments and still got the message, don't be alarmed - you might not be infected.

aye. be careful with this one. we've received 250 infected emails here at work already. Luckily the A/V software has caught them all.

One of our older Exchange servers stumbled from the load, but the others picked up the slack without incident and have kept up. They're stopping most of the messages by filtering, but the few that get through (a little less than 1 in 40) are easily stopped by Norton definitions 01/26/2004, revision 24 or later.

United Healthcare is not a small company, it's fraught with lots of bureaucracy and staid, old-fashioned thinking. They are very reluctant to step aside from big name products or services, and often can be found using the most common industry "buzz brands".

We have all Microsoft operating systems (with a very few legacy mainframes, etc). We have all IBM PCs, and all Compaq/HP servers. We use Exchange and Domino for mail, we use IIS for webhosting.

It's frustrating at times Razz

Out of curiosity, wouldn't Hotmail be considered the largest email system in the world? And, I suppose, that's probably running on Exchange too, being a Microsoft service.

Hotmail is not a real POP3 mail server. At least I think thats the difference otherwise many of the internet based systems are probably larger then us. Thats not guite right either ? I'm not sure how thats qualified. Our exchange server is internal to the company with hundreds of thousands of accounts world wide but I'm not sure how they claim is the largest. Maybe largest company mail service I believe we are also Microsofts largest corporate account.
