New video card, last week sometime put in geforce 4 128mg. Computer is working great. Yesturday I had 2 total computer lockups, resulting in rebooting computer (no prob. back in game). Last night it locked up for a third time. Reboot for over an hour and getting nothing but a black screen. Now just now at 6pm est, we try to start computer again and she loads. Any ideas on this out there ? My thought was video card blew a chip, not the case if Im running now. Step into the Shadows of the Mind

Sounds like something is overheating or your power supply is too weak for the various things connected to it. Hopefully someone that's more familiar with how to diagnose and fix these things drops in this thread.
Another thought is it might be bad memory; I've heard of that screwing up stuff with AGP before. |

Dene, see my previous post. One way to start back up immediately is pull the plug from back of computer til green light goes out, then plug it in again. This is exactly what was going on with me...time for the kitchen fan trick.

i think the most likely is the lack of cooling, but other things such as a weak power supply (you want 350w Minimum) or mismatched/dodgy memory could also cause similar issues. Herbert Dypp - Walkers of Vazaelle Inaska Pantherine - Walkers of Vazaelle

Yes check the wattage of your Power Supply, should be Min 350watts. Also if you have the VIA chipset get the 4-in-1 drivers with the agp update. Go into your Bios and setup yer AGP rate to half of your system memory (IE if you have 256 set it at 128) make sur eyour Bios is updated too there may be an update to support AGP 4x etc.
Airflow, as mentioned before, is critical now that you have this new card which generates alot of heat. For the time being keep your case open. I always suggest upgrading your PC case and get something with a nice set of fans. Youc an also keep your cpu cooler by getting new Cables like these. . Rounded IDE cables |

Uhh Yeah . . .hmm I realized I kinda made that klingon didn't I?
Ok first open your case and peek at tyour motherboard, or peeek at the manual. You are looking for the chipset, which will usually be SIS or VIA, can also be OPTi or AMD 640 however most are SIS, VIA or INTEL I am sure. If you have a VIA chipset go here and download the 4 in 1 drivers and install them. Try that first, if you still have the lockups we'll go for the next step. Send me your CPU information ok? |
