There is a program called delpart that will get rid of partitions. I do this on every install at work and never had a problem.

After that I would fdisk the hard drive then format using this command form a dos prompt format c:/s
You will need a 95/98 boot disk with format.com and delpart copied onto the disk. You have to copy format.com from a 95/98 PC. The format in windows 2000/xp will not work in DOS.
If you still have problems after you format them you really have to start looking at a hardware problem.
I had the same problems you had. Once it was ram causing the problems, then I had anther pc do the same thing and got so mad I just order a new pc. This was around the same time the Nforce 2 boards came out and looking really good on benchmarks. It has been 2 and half years on this setup and 0 problems. It is the best PC I ever owned.
