The ahem "powers that be" at work have a bastard of a new program called Web Sense and have deemed the Walkers website "GAMES" - i.e., I can no longer access from work and don't have time to read at home. Is there a way to get around this hurdle. Sucks I can still access any EZBoard I want, but am locked outta here.

Hahah....doh! If they are running a gateway server and blocked the site VIA a firewall...there are a very limited number of ways to get around that...but they aren't exactly [legal].

I'm curious, does WebSense give you any other extra information about why its blocking the site? I could add/remove some META tags to try and fool the engine, but its difficult to fool automated proxy-type filters on message boards because any number of people could post certain words that would trip it up.

Difficult to say how I'd beat it otherwise, it would be tough without knowing more about the network configuration there.

Ah, just looked into Websense.

It looks like they use a master database at the source and they keep a listing of sites on their own. It would probably be difficult to get them to remove eqwalkers.com from their GAMES listing, but... I do have something I want you to try. Drop me a PM and I'll send you the juicy details.

Wonder how they determine the site ? IP address ? if so maybe a mrror site with another address could fool it.

I wonder if its the EQ in front of Walkers, since EQ is a known game. /shrug No clue really but a wild stab in the dark.

nah Websense "learns" so the more I accessed the site the more likely it would eventually get blocked. Sorry though Shi, they allow access to 'game' sites during lunch

The Websense application that runs on the corporate end doesn't do anything but execute the blocks. The engine/database that catalogs the sites that are blocked are done by Websense themselves.

There are many ways to get around Websense, since there aren't very many configurations of it that allow all of the network traffic to go "through" Websense itself, it only monitors and checks the traffic as it passes through an existing network. The problem is, how do you bypass censorship and remain anonymous?

Websense has cataloged this site to be banned under the "games" category by domain name. So, in theory, you could access the site under a different domain. It has one, it has several, in fact. But, your lookups to the site will still be running right past big brother, and I have a feeling if we did that, he would eventually catch on.

Therefore, I want you Websense guys to try using a CGI proxy page. These particular ones use 128-bit SSL encryption, so big brother will see your traffic to and from the proxy, but he won't know where it goes from there, and he won't have any idea what's in the traffic.

I feel this will be fairly self-explanatory. Websense might have some of these blocked, or maybe all of them, I won't know until you try.

Yeah some of those are blocked - I got a slap on the wrist for trying to find proxy sites Laughing I think I had ~20-30 hits for proxy avoidance in a 30 minute period and they were not impressed. I will try some fo the others tomorrow

If none of this works, I guess we'll just spring for another domain name for you guys. How long were you able to access the site with Websense? I'm guessing it was just recently that Websense added eqwalkers.com to the block list.

While you're trying the proxies, try this one too.

http://rnj.cjb.net

CJB.net is a free forwarding service by subdomain, CJB.net is listed in the Websense directory as "Web Hosting" not sure if that means its blocked or not. Try that, too.
