|

Went to my first raid last night. You know, LOIO. Man the lag was bad. I had already set my resolution to medium even though that means I can't read signs on buildings now. And I had clipped my plane to minimum - whatever that means and does. What else can I do?
BTW, I got some sort of Gforce3 card I bought not too long ago to meet Luclin requirements. |

There's a command you can type in to turn off spell effects...I believe it is /showspelleffects off
I do this everytime I go on a raid...30 spellcasters all at once can be REALLY laggy.
There's another command (which I don't know what it is) that turns on server-side filtering (as opposed to client-side filtering)...I was told about this on our first attempt at Faydedar for Leopa's epic. It apparently helps cut down lag as well. Someone fill us in on this one please? ">

I can do that for U larn, IT does cut it down allot,on raids i do the following /showspelleffects off,/shownames off,/serverfilter on... if I'm still getting bad lag i go to the options screen and turn off the luclin effects as well.Turn particle density waay down, along with chip plane, turn off ooc,and say chat as well..I has a nvidia gfroce3 vid card as well.It works great for me,NOTE for that vid card DO NOT try to over clock it.... will lead to big probs ... keep it set on default unless ur realy comp literate which i am not.. hope that helps yall... Hm, food for thought. I too have an Nvida Gforce 3 now that you mention it. OK, here is what I heard you guys say I should be toggling back and forth based on raid / no raid situation.
/showspelleffects [ON/OFF] - Toggles spell effects (visuals) on or off.
/shownames [ON/OFF] - turns on or off visible names above PC's and NPC's heads.
/serverfilter [ON/OFF] - Allows player to turn off or on packet messages from other players, allowing for less lag in raid situations.
/channel [gsay/ooc/shout/guild/auction] - toggles the chat channels on or off.
Option Window: Partical Density Luclin Models off
Now I seem to remember something like what Kaosmos speaks of in regards to /shownames but notice that the eqmanual_supplement file does not support that contention. I don't really want to turn all names off, but just first names would be OK. Does '/shownames' 1 realy work? And what is the command to get all the name, guild, etc. back? /showname 4?
Question #2: Does my low/medium/high res setting affect lag? i.e. Can I go back to being able to read signs in the game? Have I been punishing myself for no gain?
Question #3: What effect does clipping my plane have on my view in my game window? Does it reduce how far out I can see into the distance or what? And which is better? shift + or shift - ? Which direction should I be adjusting my plane?
Question #4: Why ever turn off server side filtering? What advantage is there from client side filtering?
Question #5: How will my view change by adjusting my partical density? And can I only do this in the option window? Edited by: Jullious at: 5/17/02 10:06:17 am

Thanks for the info Kaosmos. Glad to see it will work.
Now, about my other questions. Does anyone know the answers?

So does anyone know the answer to these questions? I've tried adjusting them in game and don't really see any difference normally. Am I just missing it? |

Your connection suxors?
If you connect via modem, try using another ISP to see if that helps. |

I found one of my answers. I've got my settings set to min for a raid situation but my plane fully extended. I realized I could see stuff way our there that no one else could. But I also had lag issues. I drew my plane in close and now I can't see far but my lag went away. That answers my question as to what clipping my plane actually does. Jullious, I intended to answer this much earlier, but never really found my way around to doing it. Many sorrys.

Yes, resolution affects system lag. I keep mine around 800x600 in EQ, I think. The resolution that you set it at should depend on the memory on your video card, and will probably be around whatever you have Windows set at. But, in the end, just go with whatever compromise of speed and usability works best.

You've already found the answer to this one, of course. ">
Quote: Question #4: Why ever turn off server side filtering? What advantage is there from client side filtering?
I believe client side filtering allows you to dink around with stuff more, but I'm not sure, because I haven't done much with server side filtering. Client side filtering may just be outdated, I should really look this up.

Can't seem to find this. I'll let you know if I figure it out. |

I've been playing around with settings and getting a feel for things and I've figured out that the High/Medium/Low resolution setting greatly affects my lag. In the Bazzar I must be set for LOW and I must clip my plan by 5 or less up from minimum. If I set my setting for HIGH no amount of plane clipping is sufficient to eleminate lag.
So, what do I need to buy to fix this? Is it possible to get good enough hardware that you can set your settings on HIGH, fully extend your plan and not get lag?
My PC processor is a 733. Do I need a faster PC? I think my video card is good so it must be my PC. |

Don't worry, I play on a p2 350 still (my flashy new puter has been broken for playing games since it arrived...Alermik says it has something to do with the power source). The hamsters work hard! |

PIII 766, 512 RAM and Nvida GeForce 3 card with 32 RAM (I think). I know this is enough to play, but it does not seem to be enough to play with everything turned on. What do you think I need to play with everything turned on?
I miss not being able to read signs on the buildings. I use them to find my way around.
I miss spell effects. I use them to help figure out what is targeted and what needs to be mezzed.
And I hate having to clip my plane so much. I got killed in my last rage fight. I was standing so far back that I could not see anyone save the medding casters in front of me. And I was behind ALL of them and I STILL got caught in the AOE and died. Blind and soon dead was what I was! |
