it was probably the coffee that fixed it, I am sure there is a correlation between the amount of cafine in a user and the success they have interfacing with a computer.

I spent Friday rebuilding a laptop with a new hard drive, memory and controller cable (more like a cabelette). I had several cups of coffee and at the end of the day, with no spare parts I had a working laptop.

what ever you do.. DO NOY UPOGRADE windows ME, please for the love of everything good in the world burn your ME key and do a fresh install of XP Embarassed

I have doone a ton of upgrades to older windows versions to windowsXP and have had very poor performance and stability issues, anything before windows 2000 uses a diffrent file system (as im sure some of you know) and it doesnt do well when you convert it to the newer fileing system.move everything you want to save to your backup drive and reformat Smile trust me you will be ALOT happier you did.

(few typos)

You can still use the upgrade disk to install XP if you want. What ElSancho is saying to do (and is good advice on this topic) is to format and install XP from scratch. At some point, I believe the XP Upgrade CD will ask you for the ME CD, and it does a validation check, but that's all.

Upgrade installations are often unreliable. Sometimes the mess you may have after completing the upgrade isn't worth the trouble.

Backup your data (using any method previously described in this topic), format, and install it from scratch.
