~How Bad is Coffee For You~
Mercy Family Health Line
For those of you who'd rather die than give up your morning cup of coffee, there are actually many positive effects from coffee and its primary ingredient, caffeine. The latest research study from Japan showed that daily coffee drinking cuts the risk of liver cancer in half.
Caffeine is a psycho-stimulant that occurs naturally in coffee beans. It is also present in smaller quantities in tea and chocolate and is also in many sodas.
The good things about the caffeine in coffee include:
· Promotes wakefulness, improves thinking and enhances mood.
· If you drink it before exercise, it improves muscle coordination and strength and increase energy expenditure, which helps you burn calories.
· Relaxes airways helping decrease asthma attacks.
· Acts as a laxative, helping to prevent constipation.
The not-so-good things about coffee and caffeine include:
· It is addictive like nicotine and many other psycho-stimulants.
· It can cause insomnia if it you drink it late in the day.
· Excessive coffee can make you anxious and jittery.
· It can increase production of stomach acid and contribute to gastric reflux and heartburn.
· It can increase the risk of osteoporosis in high quantities.
· For people with heart disease, caffeine can cause palpitations and heartbeat irregularities.
Once again, the bottom line is, if you enjoy coffee and have no health reasons for not drinking it, keep drinking--in moderation! _________________
