256 video card

Just moved my primary system over to a 256 card (upgrade from a 128)
I've noticed that 100% clip plane can be achieved without lag.
In areas where lag used to be a problem, my mouse scrolls at normal
speed. A few frames per second get missed in areas such as the POK,
but I can navigate the bazaar without being tempted to look at my feet.

Dramatic difference, I recommend the upgrade to anyone that's been considering it, it's better than expected and the feel of being lagless is something you never knew you wanted so much.

Multiple instances in the background do not seem to affect graphic perfomance.

Mind telling us the Exact specs of the card you purchased? I run a radeon 9800 Pro and experience none of the issues mentioned. However, I am still interested to see what other's might be running for video cards.

Keep in mind the card won't make that big of a difference if your bus speed can't transfer the information or your processor is slow in processing information also. I use a Radeon 9700 Pro (128) but I'm playing on a old 700mhz motherboard. In theory, my card should be able to handle the game without any problems if I have a better motherboard/processor combination. I also have 640MB of memory. With my set-up, I doubt a 256 card would make any difference.

Actually, I take that back, I just realized I had a 64MB 4x Geforce2 in it. So I went from that to 256 8x. Still a dramatic boost. Sometimes, i get a little confused keeping track of what's what since I have more than one computer.

On one of my other computers which has 450mhz CPU, 128mb 4x vidcard, 100mhz FBS and about 200mb RAM -I've found that with detail set to low, I have flawless video performance, but haven't tried cranking it up yet. it's kinda nice to know that if ya want to dualbox, you can do it on a cheap system. Ebay and half.com have some insane deals on used systems.
