Just a word of warning for anyone else who happens to have an AMD Athlon 64-bit CPU in their PC....

Do Not Install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

...Damn Microsoft.

I thought that SP2 and AMD 64-bitters worked well due to that new extension thing that SP2 was supposed to use with supported CPUs which the AMD 64 bit was one. But if previous actions are any source of info, I guess the feature is enabled which then means that due to sloppy code, crashes everything.

Two things:

If you're using an AMD 64-bit processor and the 32-bit version of Windows, you're not taking advantage of the processor. There's a special version of Windows XP for 64-bit architecture.

Secondly, if you happen to be using the 64-bit version of Windows, the very first page of the SP2 "Before you Install" page says this:

Microsoft wrote:
You cannot use Windows XP SP2 to update the following operating systems:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or other earlier Windows operating systems

Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003

Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

I have a store bought (www.meshcomputers.com) AMD Athlon 64-bit, that was shipped with 32-bit Win XP Home. (I didnt have the choice of a 32 or 64-bit OS). It uses a SATA hard drive connected using the mobo's RAID connector....so you have to supply a RAID driver at windows install.

I have tried to install Win XP Pro (32-bit) a number of times, but the mobo suppliers RAID driver, when put onto floppy, results in an error 'in oemdisk.c', when the Windows install procedure trys to use the driver. So at the moment I am left using the PC suppliers 'rescue & recovery CD'.

It would have been nice if this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;878474) had been highlighted before installed the SP2 Smile

I was going to wait atleast 6 months before i download service pack 2 since microsoft is the devil anyways I figure I will wait till they get done fixing all the things SP2 will nerf. I wasnt aware of WindowsXP 64bit Edition was out yet? I have a 89% Longhorn but no 64bit Sad would love to have alil more info, maybe Ill do some reading but didnt think it was going to be anytime soon.

(edit)
For your raid drivers see if the mobo your useing ( didnt say what kind ) has a support website, you can usually find the updated drivers for anything related, even for a brand new mobo you will find updated versions. make sure your picking the right raid drivers from the floppy if theres more then 1 choice, and make sure you only have 1 raid hook-up (i have 4 raid ports on my board, fast-track and promise)

Unforunately, upgrading to XP Pro from XP Home won't fix your problem. You're going to have to stick with SP1a no matter what the scenario is, even if you do manage to get Windows XP 64-bit edition. SP2 won't work for that under any circumstances (at least not yet).

Use your rescue CD, count your blessings and go on with it.

I'm quite disappointed in this AMD 64-bit processor push, anyway. There's very little software that's written for Windows boxes that will support it. Even if you do have a 64-bit version of Windows, there's still only 3D modeling software, maybe a very late version of AutoCAD, maybe some video rendering software, and possibly Doom 3's graphic engine. Razz We're talking less than 10% of the software world for USERS.

To date, the majority of the world's utilized 64-bit processing is all done on BSD/AIX/HP-UX/UNIX/LINUX/etc. Grats for getting it, but it's more than half-dead to you. Razz

Intell is set to release their 64bit chips in late 04 1'st quarter 05. this along with the new sockets in addation with the pci express and new nvidia dual pci vid cards, 64bit and a butt load of new games due out for xmas hopefully will drive the market to get in gear with the latest 64bit "bandwagon". The cost is extremely high for a product that has little to no software support (in 64bit mode) but the architecture alone makes the 64bit processors far beyond anything to date for FSB and L2 cache. 2 things important to anyone who games. AFAIK, Windows 64 Bit hasn't been publically released yet. If I am wrong, please let me know, but after looking around MS's website, I didn't see any mention of it.

just an update for anyone interested...

Microsoft supposed workaround doesn't seem to work for my machine.
a) bootcfg is not to be found on my installation of Win XP Home....move to b)...
b) Editing boot.ini and adding 'alwaysoff' to the \noexecute option had no change...onwards to c)...
c) couldn't disable mpegport.sys as it doesn't seem to be installed.

...back to square one.

EDIT: For anyone interested, my mobo is the Asus K8V SE Deluxe.
