It's official! The next Fan Faire will be in New Orleans in October. Dates are forthcoming, but it looks like it will be Halloween weekend. They're trying to secure room rates of $109, but hotel not disclosed yet.

New Orleans? Dang. Don't think I'm gonna be going to that one... Having been there once, and making the terrible mistake of going for a walk in the French Quarter at 8 in the morning, I don't think I could ever go back there.

Tyranimus - elaborate on that story. I sure would like to know what happened at 8 in the morning.

Well, I was down there for a Cisco conference a few years back, and the first night I was there I decided that I didn't feel like going out and drinking heavily like the rest of the crew (I had to take the CCNA test and wanted to be at top form, but it was unnecessary since it's a ridiculously easy test), so I turned in early. I ended up waking up early, and since everyone else was dead to the world, I decided to go for a walk.

The first thing that hit me was the smell. Imagine standing next to your local landfill with your nostrils wide open... <shudder> The next thing was seeing what had been left behind the night before... the trash, the vomit, the other bodily functions left behind, the obviously mentally disturbed individual that was "pleasuring himself" on one of the balconies... I couldn't eat for the rest of the day, and sometime around the evening I tried to drink to forget... I couldn't.

So, no more New Orleans for me, thank you very much.

Oh, and since the faire is supposed to happen at Halloween, and I'm going to be in Vegas, and I have yet to figure out how to have two physical manifestations of myself in two widely separated places...

Yea. New Orleans can be fun, or make you seek counseling depending on where you are. One thing to make sure is that you arent standing under a balcony. ( At least during Mardi Gras ) ROFLMAO

"New Awlawns" is AWESOME. The graveyards there are they sweetest ever! (Hold the Goth comments Razz ) Really, though, it's a huge tourist attraction because they are very old and all above ground. If you're an old architecture type person, you'll totally dig em. If you ever read any Anne Rice, she totally paints an accurate picture of how New Orleans is, it just sorta brings it to life being there in person.

Bourbon St is fun, but it can get a little crazy. This is sorta how it is... Voodoo shop, walk-thru bar (yep, you can drink on the streets there), strip club, random shop, bar, bar, strip club, bar, random shop, bar, bar, strip club...

The only thing I didn't like was... on every single street corner there is somebody trying to get your money. Whether it be a balloon animal guy who makes you one and throws it at you when you walk buy, then expects a tip for the balloon you really never wanted, or the random person asking to bum money, and not accepting no for an answer. They also have a lot of street performers, mimes, clowns and whatever else. Though I don't mind them so much. They key is to not look like a tourist at all, or you will have many natives trying to scam you for all you are worth.
