Ok, done. Now the only partition left is the Extended DOS one that's 4500meg in size. It won't let me delete it.

Is there a logical DOS drive showing up yet? That will need to be deleted before you can delete the extended DOS drive.

I deleted the Logical Partition. I only have the Extended DOS one left and it won't let me delete it. Says it can't while a Logical one exists which is wierd since the Extended one is the only one showing up when I look at partition information.

I'm also getting a message that no partition is set as active and I need to set one as active.

You shouldn't worry about setting an active partition.

Since you got the big one off, reboot and give your XP installation another try. You may be able to deal with the stray partition in the XP disk setup.

Crying or Very sad Now I'm getting error message that no operating system is found when I boot with the CD. I can still boot into DOS with the win98 floppy.

I was away doing some work, and Dane was working up a reply for you. He can't post because its too long, but he wrote exactly what I would write, so here it goes:

Hm, that answers some questions I had earlier. Sounds like all this time, you haven't actually been booting from the CD (although it looks identical).

What happened is a little hard to explain simply, but the install files I mentioned earlier (the ones that get copied to the local drive before reboot) were making it look like you were booting from the CD.

No matter, the issue is easy to resolve. What you need to do is get into your BIOS, or motherboard setup program. Sounds intimidating, but it's easy enough.

When you boot up your PC, right after the power comes on, you probably see some text flash by about 'Hit delete to enter setup' or some such. (Sometimes it's F1, sometimes it's ctrl-s.) You want to hit that key as it's booting, and it should bring you to a BIOS setup control panel.

It's difficult to provide screenshots at this point, simply because there are quite a few different types of BIOS setups, and all are fairly dissimilar.

One of the options as you navigate around in there should relate to 'startup order' or 'boot' order. In there, you want to make sure your CD drive is set above your floppy drive and hard drive (that way it looks for bootable information in THAT drive first before telling you that no operating system could be found).

If this is particularly confusing, or if you cannot get into your BIOS for whatever reason, I'll try to walk you through it more fully.

Let me know how it looks,
-Dane

If ya get really frustrated, you're welcome to call me on my cell phone (the number is posted in Contacts in the Private forums).

Well, it let me go in and delete the 4500meg drive. It's now in the format mode and taking a while. Shocked I'll keep ya posted.

Windows XP Pro is installing, but some files are missing. I'm having to get them from Neff's puter and put them on my thumb drive since my puter won't read my A drive. It just asks me if I want to reformat the drive when I put a floppy in. Any idea how I fix that?

I don't think I'm following. You have a retail Windows XP CD and it is asking you for files the CD doesn't have? That's bizarre.

I agree, but I got the files off Neff's puter. They were Media Player related so no biggie.
