All of a sudden, whenever I try to get into any game, everquest, horizons, whatever, I get message " A required .DLL file, D3D8.DLL, was not found". OK what the hell is this and where did it go. So far I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the games, and have updated my vid drivers. Whats next?

Just because it can't be found doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore. Go to My Computer, Explore, and right click to the Search option. Select your C drive and type in the .DLL exactly as you saw it (D3D8.dll) and see if it shows up in the search.

If you find it, then navigate to where it is and see if it's with other .DLLs (typically in Win32 folder). If it is, then the problem is with the application that requires it, not the .DLL itself.

If you can't find it, then go to Microsoft.com and check the Windows help library to see if anything is mentioned about it, since there has to be some reason it was either moved or deleted.

Run a virus scan too to eliminate the possibility that a virus is eating your system.

Maybe Shi or Dane can shed more light on this after you follow those steps above.

D3D8.dll sounds like Direct3D for DirectX version 8.

Have you tried reinstalling DirectX?

Did you do the one from Windows Update, or download the Runtime?

If you tried either of those, try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A6DEE0DB-DCCE-43EA-87BB-7C7E1FD1EAA2&displaylang=en

Download the entire redistribution package. That should replace all of your DirectX files.

Shi is right, your D3D8.dll is DirectX related.

Go to your Start button on the bottom left corner of your screen, and select Run. In the text box type DXDIAG and hit "Ok."

On the first page of the diagnostic it should tell you what version of DirectX you are running. If you're running anything other than 9b, then you need to download it. If you already downloaded it, use Shane's link to download it again.

Once done, repeat above steps and when you get to the diagnostic window again, select the DirectX tab, and the D3D8.dll should be listed there.
