I just finished reinstalling Everquest on Jorlana's new computer for like the 4th time. The install goes flawlessly, as you might imagine, and everything else works perfectly, but when the EQ Patcher goes through it's routine, it bombs out. It gives up on certain files, saying it's 'corrupt' or something.

Reinstalling doesn't help, apparently, although I was able to keep retrying the patching process until it let me click 'Play'... but then it just crashed shortly after server selection.. and after a few more tries, got all the way to character selection, and then crashed.

The same disks installed EQ without incident on my new computer a few weeks ago. The hardware in her computer is nearly identical to mine.

If anyone has any ideas (nudge Shiloch), I am open to suggestions... unless they consist of "Get an nVidia card". Heh.

Anything unusual that Jorlana has on her computer? Perhaps she installed something that you don't have? Like Beastlords of the North Calendar? I'd point towards something software, maybe though it could be a bad memory module?

Sounds to me like you're having some sort of connectivity issue. It's not crashing at the same point in the game launch, and random timing usually indicates an internet problem. How is her computer connected to the internent? Are you using a LAN? Or does she have a direct cable/DSL? Any firewalls running in the background? Need more info......

Nope, internet connectivity is fine. It seems to be some kinda hardware issue. We're going out to get a new power supply today and hoping that that will solve the problem. The man is thinking that the existing one just can't manage to run the cd rom and the hard drive effectively along with everything else, and that's causing some corrupted files which make EQ crash every time I load it up. We'll see if that helps, heading out to get the new one soonish!

Well before he buys a new power supply, ask him to check your hard drive then too. If the hard drive is bad (damaged sectors), that could possible explain the problem too.

Frustrating, but resolved. Turns out it was bad memory AND an insufficient power supply. Thanks for the help, guys!

Was it bad RAM, or bad hard drive, Dane? Just curious...

It WAS bad RAM. That and a cheap PSU (it came with the case). When I tested it the first time in another machine, it worked perfectly... then later it started giving the same problems.. the odd thing was, it wasn't one bad stick, it was two. Swapping them made no difference. Decent Corsair memory, too. Alas.

Well.. RAM is RAM. A lot of it comes from the same Malaysian manufacturer. Because RAM its small and relatively volatile, its hard to blame the distributor for a bad chip.
