So my main CPU died, my nice little 2100Athlon. It was in a bad spot and overheated and although normally it would just lock up, but since I bought like 6 fans I haven't had a problem other than it being extremely LOUD. This time it just shut down completely. After looking at it I could verify it had indeed been extraordinarily overheated and I could smell the fumes coming off of it. When I waited for it to cool off and tried to start it again, no response. This was last night. Still not working this morning. So could it be just the power supply that overheated? As a non technical computer person I really have no idea what happened and if anyone has some ideas please let me know =( Thankfuly I have a laptop although I hate playing on it *sigh*

These processors run very hot and if you had a heat sink that relies mostly on the fan and the fan dies well your CPU will be tits up in no time flat. Buy a quality heat sink and make sure there is a good thermal connection between the CPU and heatsink. Don't ask me how I know this ">

LOL I bet I know why Gryf. heh heh But, yeah, AMD runs hot as hell, I watched a video on the net where they took the heatsink/fan off an AMD chip and within seconds it was smoking and literally burnt, they did the same to an Intel chip and it was fine for quite awhile. AMD is good equipment but like Gryf said, make sure your connection between the heatsink and chip is very damn tight.
