ICS and network bridging

Hey all,

I got a new system. I've got both my new sys (the host) and the older system (the client) running Win XP. Now, I've run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and seem to be having some problems - Namely, I can connect to the Internet just fine via the host system but my client cannot connect even though it has its 'fake' IP address show up when I do a "ipconfig /all"...

The host has two Ethernet cards. The first is a Accton EN1207D that is connected to the cable modem. The second is a DLink DFE-530TX that has the crossover patch and connects to an identical DLink card in the other system.

When I open up 'Network Connections' on the host system, I can see that the Accton card is set to 'Enabled, Shared, Firewall' (which, AFAIK, it should be). Now, underneath that section in Network Connections, I see some network bridges. I've got 3 bridges as such:

Local Area Connection 2 Enabled, Bridged D-Link DFE-520TX
1394 Connection Enabled, Bridged 1394 Net Adapter
Network Bridge (9) Enabled, Bridged MAC Bridge miniport


Now, I can transfer files between the comps but when I use the second system (the one with only the 1 Dlink card), I cannot connect to the Internet. I've tried rearranging the bridges but to no avail. What makes this frustrating is that when I open up Network Connections on the second system, it clearly shows a connection to the Internet (via LAC1).

I've tried turning off the firewall, changing the PCI ports of the cards, searching MSN/Help, reinstall the TCP/IP protocols, manually configuring IP addresses but all to no avail. (And yes, I've run ICS about 10 times to try to rectify this).

I also cannot ping my host comp from my client comp when I do the old "ping 192.168.0.1" from the DOS prompt. (Yes, I took the firewall down when i tried this)

I'm sure i'll figure this out soon but any help is appreciated.

I've got a similar configuration, only I'm running a switchable hub between the PC's, and the cable modem is connected via USB to the main PC. No problems here, except my ISP sucks ass. /sigh.

BTW, is there a way to kill the wizards in XP for the configuration of ICS? I hate those.

i had similar problems with a similar setup, Abin. I eventually got it working but more by accident than design - si i can't really offer any help.

If you can afford it however, buy a router. makes life a hell of a lot easier as you dont need a software/OS based firewall.

I have always strongly object to use MS OSes for any network functions, sorry I can't help, except by advising you to get either a router or a BDS or Linux box acting as a router.
