GOod looking out. . .I was gonna have him try to connect the USB to his PC and the Ethernet to a router. . .But those are probably the best bet, also inexpensive!

Okay, here goes. I want to add a router to my network to act as a firewall etc. and need some advice. My home network consists of 2 AMD Athlon PC's with WinXP. Each has 1 DLink Ethernet card. One machine is attached to a CableModem via a USB socket on the PC...I assume that a router will sit between the Cable Modem and the PCs, but is it possible to find a router that has an input from a USB port and outputs to the 2NIC's?
I have looked on Linksys' web site and they do routers which connect to the PCs USB port, but this isn't what I want.
Any help?

I think I am confused? You want a router that takes a USB input? Typically a Router has a WAN port and a Network port. The WAN port goes to your cable modem and the Network port to your switch or hub. You can buy a router/switch combo which is even easier. There is really no need to plug a USB into anything having to do with your modem or router. The router will tell the modem to stay connected or when to connect. Hope this helps!

my cable modem does not connect to a PC's secondary NIC but to my PC's USB port. So, the WAN port goes to my ISP, the network port goes straight to my PC's USB port.
sorry, trying to clarify further...i understand the relationship with cablemodem and router, but the connection from the modem to the router has to be via USB. (my ISP has supplied its own proprietry CableModem and thats how has to be "> )

think i've got it sorted in my head now. Should have read my own link. the CableModem I have can use EITHER modem-to-PC USB or modem-to-NIC. I'm guessing I just have to connect the modem to a router and then connect my 2 PC's directly to the router (negating the need for my current DLink Hub). With this in mind, I've just ordered a Broadband Cable/DSL Router from LinkSys.
thanks for the information guys ">

LOL - Didn't realize you were in England! Make sure you or a router/switch combo. . .it will be much better than having the router connected to your hub. A hub shares bandwidth whereas Switches keep each port consistant. . .that's in lay terms. . .
