Ok, I've got an old pos computer at home with a LAN card. It has Windows 98 Second Edition on it, and my main PC has Windows 2000. I want to share my internet connection from the Windows 2000 PC so I can use my Windows 98 PC on the internet.
I've tried several different things to get this to work. I'd like to do it without changing the OS if possible. I'm not sure the pos could handle anything else. Let me know what you guys think, and ask me questions if I did not leave enough info. Shiloch Venzolmes _________________ Sage Shiloch Venzolmes - Arch Convoker - Walkers

i have 2 pc's running XP using ICS. i've not tried the OS setup you mentioned but prior to getting XP i had 2 98SE systems. i could not get ICS to work and ended up using a third party program (like winroute or winproxy - i tried 'em both!).
one thing i've found with my current setup - ICS wont work if the host computer has the microsoft firewall enabled - might be the same in 2000??

Go into network settings and add Netbui as a protocol on both machines, that should do it, let me know if not Magelo Profile Edited by: Thallas at: 6/13/02 9:28:32 am

i don't think you need netbui (unless thats specific to WIN98 or 2000 - as XP definately doesnt need)

A proxy won't allow you to access all internet functions (like Everquest), though, so ICS is preferred. I use ProxyPlus, but that's only b/c the computer with the internet connection isn't recent enough to have ICS.
It looks fairly easy to set up, though the disk that you're supposed to use to set up the client computers sometimes complains that you don't have administrator access (this was in Win98, hence why I was confused). /shrug |

I may have misunderstood. Netbui will let 2 pre-XP windows PC talk to EACH OTHER. All you do is add the protocol. In order to share an internet connection yer gonna have to run a proxy app on one of them. This does NOT require netbui. Several share/freeware proxies out there. Most of them have a setup wizard that walks you thru the setup process. Magelo Profile |

go go Slackware. This is what I did at my house (pentium 100mhz) and I have had 7 computers on internet at same time with no problems for years. Takes a little bit of reading and some trial and error, but overall not hard to do. It can also be used as a firewall. Corpsed

umm..as a firewall is the ONLY reason you'd want to do this. Other than 'because you can', which isnt really a reason ">
