Yup, I attacked a guard the same way as a newb. Moved mine to the tilde (~) before I dinged 2.

Mine is '='

For the last turn in of the staff of the wheel, I attacked the NPC... And Everfrost is a *long* run naked from WK...

I moved it after that! :rollin

I'm curious here...

Anyone who's read the manual (I know, I think 3 of us in the entire EQ community did that) knows it advises MOVING the autoattack key from it's default (A), to avoid accidentally attacking something and getting yourself killed. (I personally didn't learn the wisdom of this until my very first level 1 character attacked the bard in Rivervale, and I wound in Misty Thicket for the very first time, completely lost and terrified. It was a blast!)

So, where did you move your autoattack key to?

Mine is the tilde key (~), up beside the "1" on the number line. (No, not to the right...that's the "2" key...to the left. Yes, that's it.)

Where's yours?

Mine is the = button. Now that I'm more ahem...experienced...I don't auto attack by accident anymore. I have a MA and SA hotbutton made which has eliminated that problem for me.

I read the manual, and I accidentally attacked a quest mob once, but to date still use the a button.

Autoattack key is ~, but I have the autoattack button on my hot key pad. I only assist when I have to, but I do have an assist button as well, and change it as the situation warrants.

Autoattack for me is ~, been that way since first time in the game.. Laminar warned me to change it before it got me killed hehe. On top of that, I use q and e for target nearest PC and NPC, since they're so close to the wasd keys I use to drive.
That and 4 assist keys (/assist , main assist, second assist, and assist puller) keep me from fucking up in most cases. Also I have 4 /target hotkeys for people I think will be getting hit (I always have /target otherenchanter on raids and usual /target maincleric).

I actually disabled the autoattack key and just have attack as 1 in my hotbutton bank. /shrug, it works for me. (though, I did die once after the turn-in for my EB necklace when I was trying to say something in group and didn't hit enter hard enough, and when I got around to hitting 1, lo and behold, I pissed off the quest NPC. Ooops)
